The 2007 Berkeley County Digital Orthophotography Project is officially finished and the results are available to county departments and to the public. The project, which unofficially finished in March of 2008, took just over a year to complete and was funded through a cost-sharing initiative between eight different government offices. The task of the project was to create a set of detailed aerial photographs of the county to help with development, planning, emergency services and other needs of the area.G-I-S Coordinator Matthew Mullenax presented the results of the project to the Berkeley County Commission earlier today and explained that the new detailed images will allow the county to make more accurate and informed decisions.Mullenax said the new images put Berkeley County light years ahead of the other counties in the state because the older style of imagery was not always discernable.Mullenax said the data should be revisited in two or three years to keep up with growth in the area, but said having the base data is an excellent start to keeping Berkeley County ahead technologically.
