People anticipate this time year for many reasons, but this past weekend marked one of the biggest, the debut of the local strawberry season.Agricultural development office Kellie Boles with the Jefferson County Development Authority says that we are at the height of strawberries locally, and that while this year’s supply of berries is average, the berries themselves will be on the small but flavorful side due to lack of sunshine and an abundance of rain.Boles says that the next two weeks will be the peak production period for the sought after crop. She anticipates the usual huge demand, saying that they can not get enough local berries to market and that what they do have will go quickly.
