Paving to Continue in the Panhandle

The state Department of Transportation will be spending about $100 million in paving state roads this year, and among their summer projects is the continued work on State Route 9 in the Eastern Panhandle.Brent Walker of the State Department of Transportation says with gas prices soaring, the next few months will be critical for monitoring revenues coming in from gas taxes.  He says that if the gas tax revenues come in too low, we could be seeing less construction not just in the area, but throughout the state. Fewer road miles could be paved this year than in years past, but Walker says what resources the state does have will be thrown to paving, even at the expense of routine maintenance programs such as mowing. He says the next couple of months will be critical for monitoring the gas tax revenues, but added that construction along part of Route 9 from Charles Town to the Virginia State Line will be continuing into the summer.
