United Way to Host Breakfast

Executive Director of the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle Jan Callen had some great news for David Welch when he visited Panhandle Live on Thursday; he said this year’s campaign set a record with $1.6 million raised, which is 20% higher than last year’s campaign.  As part of the celebration the United Way will have their annual recognition of their volunteers and campaign supporters with a breakfast on Monday morning.   Callen said that the event is about as big as they come because it is the volunteers and supporters that make the United Way successful. In addition to thanking their more than 60 volunteers, Callen said they will be recognizing business performers.  He revealed that the top performer in the Eastern Panhandle for this past year was Charles Town Races and Slots who raised $55,000.The significance of their contribution is that although the race track gives a corporate donation, a lot of the money came from the employees themselves through volunteer work and out of their own pockets.Ecolab will be recognized as the corporation with the largest percentage of improvement between 2006 and 2007.  Callen said that the most successful campaigns occur when management puts together an employee team and the employee team gets the freedom to come up with their own ideas for building donations. The breakfast will be at 8:00am on Monday morning at the Clarion Inn in Shepherdstown.
