The United Way of the Eastern Panhandle held their Annual Campaign Awards Breakfast Monday morning at the Clarion Inn in Shepherdstown. More than 200 people attended the event which recognized the corporations, groups and individuals that donated their time and money to bring the 2007 campaign up to a record $1.6 million.Ken Tyler, who served as president elect and campaign chair in 2007, will take over as President of the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle in 2008. He said the biggest success of the organization is the difference they make in the lives of people in the Eastern Panhandle. The United Way is in the process of adopting a community impact model of operation in the panhandle. Tyler said that under the new system the campaign is divided into three categories: thriving children, strong families and independent seniors, along with a basic needs category. Agencies identify themselves under one of those categories and through a specific application and monitoring process the United Way discovers where to focus its dollars. Tyler said several new and exciting initiatives have already come out of the change and will be unveiled later this year. The three big givers of 2007 were given their awards during the breakfast. The gold winner for most money raised was Charles Town Races and Slots, the Bank of Charles Town won the silver and bronze went to Quad Graphics.
