Re-opening of Jefferson County Jail Slated for September

President of the Jefferson County Commission Francis Morgan stopped by Monday’s Panhandle Live where she discussed the restoration of an historic jail into usable office space.  The jail was the site of several historic treason trials according to Morgan, and through adaptive reuse will be renovated to house the circuit clerk’s offices and the family court.  The process of adaptive reuse is especially important for the development of Jefferson County as a whole because of the hundreds of the historic structures in the county that are currently not being used.  Morgan said she was interested the idea of reusing these structures for the sake of development and economic efficiency. The facility is already being utilized by the clerk’s office and family court, but Morgan announced that the building will be officially welcomed on September 20, 2008 with a celebratory re-opening of the jail as part of Heritage Days.
