Berkeley County residents will now be able to recycle their batteries. The county’s Solid Waste Authority is adding automotive and household battery recycling to the Berkeley County Recycling Program.
The recycling centers in South Berkley and Grapevine Road will be accepting automotive, lawn tractor, rechargeable and dry battery cells immediate, starting July 16, 2008. The centers in Marlow and Hedgesville, however, will not be accepting batteries.
According to the Solid Waste Authority: a simple rule for interested battery recyclers to remember is: if it’s rechargeable, it’s recyclable. They say the purpose of recycling is to protect the environment from heavy metal contamination. Used batteries that are generated by households in small quantities are in many cases, considered hazardous waste.
