County Clerk John Small and Bonnie Woodfall, Chief Deputy of Elections for Berkeley County, came before the Berkeley County Commission during their weekly meeting Thursday to update commissioners on Election Day.A ballot position drawing was held on Tuesday to decide how the names for those running for the positions of Justice of the Supreme Court of Appeals and local magistrates will appear on the November ballot. The ballots will be finalized and early voting will begin on October 15, the day after the deadline for voter registration.Berkeley County will also be taking part in new methods for casting absentee ballots being offered by the Federal Government. Active duty members of the military and citizens working over seas may now vote via fax or e-mail in West Virginia, and via fax in Berkeley County; however, the voter must sign a waiver giving up the right to privacy of the ballot. Woodfall explained that keeping a voter’s choices secret when it is sent through fax or e-mail is impossible, and so the waivers must be signed to indicate the voter knew their votes would not remain private.Legal council for the county commission Norwood Bentley questioned the idea, and indicated he would investigate the legality of the matter.
