Pilot Program Launched at Grapevine Road Recycling Center

The Grapevine Road Recycling Center will host a four-month pilot program to test the effectiveness and economics of Freon unit recycling.  The program is part of the Berkeley County Solid Waste Authority’s efforts to expand recycling options in the area.  Chairman of the Authority Clint Hogbin says that if this program is successful it may be adopted at other facilities in the area.

The Federal Environmental Protection Agency requires that Freon be captured rather than being released into the environment.  Appliances containing Freon such as refrigerators must therefore be taken to special facilities for disposal.  Hogbin says the Solid Waste Authority has teamed up with an entity to properly remove the Freon and that the metal will then be recycled.

People wishing to participate can bring any appliances that contain or once contained Freon for free disposal at the Grapevine Road Facility Monday through Saturday.  Hogbin only asks that people bring help for lifting some of the heavier appliances, and that all items being brought for recycling are emptied of food, trash or other material that may have accumulated.
