The 14th Annual United Way ‘Day of Caring’ kicked off at 7:30 am Tuesday morning at the War Memorial Park in Martinsburg. David Welch hosted a special live edition of Panhandle Live from the park. He spoke with the Executive Director of the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle Jan Callen, as well as other professionals and organizers volunteering their time to help.
R.B. Seem, ‘Day of Caring’ organizer – and Vice President of M-V-B Bank in Martinsburg – tells us there are over 100 projects scheduled for the event, but even if you can’t take off to volunteer for a project, there’s still a lot you can do to chip in and help. Seem coordinated the Mega food drive and will spend the ‘Day of Caring’ with his fellow volunteers as they make more than 160 stops to collect food donations for CCAP Loaves and Fishes. Boxes were placed throughout Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan Counties for the Panhandle-wide effort.
Welch also spoke with Al Britton, General Manager of Charles Town Races and Slots, who have put a lot into the ‘Day of Caring’ and do most of their community outreach through the United Way. Britton discussed not only the company’s involvement with the event, but also the enthusiasm from race track employees who are also participating by giving back to the community. The event started with a breakfast at War memorial park in Martinsburg at 7:30 pm and will wrap up with a dinner at the Clarion Inn in Shepherdstown. More than 1,200 people will have spent the day giving back to their community with projects including painting and cleaning, building handicap access ramps and even working to improve community areas such as the parks and senior center.
