Washington High School Hosts Candidate Forums

Wednesday night centered on potential Jefferson County Commissioners as the debate forums being sponsored by WEPM and the Journal continued.  Candidates from the Harpers Ferryand Kabletown Districts came to Washington High School to face questions from panelists and citizens about how they would change the county government, handle some budgetary constraints and deal with zoning, the issue that ultimately dominated both debates.

Jefferson County Circuit Clerk and democratic candidate for the Kabletown District Patsy Noland faced off against republican candidate Frank Kubic.  The two focused on the changes they would make if elected to the commission, with Noland focusing on controlling the budget and Kubic expressed a desire to change the direction of county government.

Democrat Lyn Widmyer debated with republican Mellodie Williams and the unaffiliated Paul Ashbaugh.  Among the issues the three candidates discussed was what they feel is the biggest problem facing the county that they would address.  Widmyer spoke to a lack of confidence in the county commission and the need for a more orderly approach to issues.  Williams said communication with the people is a constant concern with voters and Ashbaugh feels that big government needs to be downsized.

The debates continue next Wednesday at the Old Opera House when Herb Snyder will debate Bob Adams for the 16thState Senate District and Natalie tenant and Charles Minimah vie for West Virginia Secretary of State.

Governor Joe Manchin will be at Hedgesville High School Thursday to face his opponent, Republican Russ Weeks.
