Citizens Signing Petition to Vote for Zoning

Jefferson County has a new zoning ordinance after commissioners enacted it last week, but citizens who were unhappy that it was never put before them for a vote have one last chance under House Bill 4511.  According to this piece of legislation, the zoning ordinance will be put before the people for a vote if 10% of the county’s registered voters, between 2,800 and 3,200 people, sign a petition before the ordinance goes into effect on November 2, 2008.

Rhonda Lehman, Co-Chair and a spokesperson for the group says the petition is not at all against zoning, but is about fundamental property rights, and that something that important needs to be decided upon by the people.

Many area businesses have volunteered to participate by making petitions available for residents to sign.  They include: C.A.R.S. and Town and Country Nursery in Kearnysville, Guy’s Buick in Ranson, Apple Valley Tire in Halltown, Dean’s lawn Mower Shop in Shenandoah Junction, and Valley Hardware, Grandma’s Kitchen, Collin’s Barber Shop and Needful Things in Charles Town.  Citizens may also contact Lehman via e-mail at R30NI@aol.com.
