Candidate Visits Martinsburg Senior Center

The Democratic nominee for the second congressional district Anne Barth was in the Eastern Panhandle this morning. After a stop on WEPM’s Panhandle Live she traveled to the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Senior Center to discuss her stance on Social Security.  She said she would never vote to privatize Social Security and pointed to the latest financial crisis as an example as to why putting money from Social Security in the stock market would be a mistake. One of the arguments for putting Social Security at least partially in the stock market is to make sure that the program is fully funded and the benefits are secure for future generations.  Barth said that as long term solutions are sought, a short term solution would be to stop diverting funds from the Social Security Trust Fund.Barth signed a pledge that she would preserve Social Security for West Virginia’s seniors during her trip to the senior center.   Current Congresswoman Republican Shelly Moore Capito visited the center earlier this year.  The two face off in the general election in November.(photos by Robert Lyles)
