Martinsburg Honors Area Veterans

Veterans and civilians alike gathered around the Doughboy Memorial in downtown Martinsburg Tuesday to celebrate Veterans Day.  The ceremony began at 11:00am as Master of Ceremonies Danny Staggers welcomed various veterans groups from around the area and presided over the placing of wreaths in front of the World War I Memorial.The special guest speaker was Congressman David O’Brien Martin who spoke about the impact veterans have made from the Revolutionary War all the way up to the War in Iraq.  Martin, a veteran himself, said it was inspiring to see so many people gathered remembering the service of West Virginians and Americans.  He pointed out that freedom is not free, but has been won throuh the sacrifice of men and women who serve their nation.  The ceremony ended with a prayer led by American legion Chaplain Steve Miller and the signing of God Bless America led by Bonnie Barrett followed by a 21 gun salute and taps for those veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.                                                                                                                                                                                                         Doughbiy Memorial Wreaths in front of WWI Doughboy Memorial Danny Staggers                         Congressman David O’Brien Martin Veterans Combined Honor Guard Doughboy Memorial from behind Honor Guard
