Berkeley County Announces Layoffs

The Berkeley County Commission made the decision to reduce the county workforce by four jobs during their regular meeting on Thursday.   An administrative assistant in the County Commission office, an administrative assistant in the Planning Department, as well as a development field inspector and assistant plans examiner from the Engineering/Permits Department will all be let go in a move that will ultimately save the county $184,907 annually, before paying unemployment expenses.  Four other positions are being left vacant which will mean 8% of the county’s general fund staff.

Commissioners tasked Human Resources Director Alan Davis to create a policy for workforce reduction back in December.  Davis has since met with various department heads to determine which position may be expendable.  Remaining employees will be adding to their duties in order to keep county services up and running, but Davis said he was hopeful that this action would be enough to maintain the county budget at least through the end of this fiscal year.

Berkeley County Sheriff Kenny LeMaster said his office had several openings and may be able to help place some of the laid off workers. Blue Ridge Community and technical College has offered to assist in resume writting and job skill training.
