Senator Byrd Honors 167th
The 167th Airlift Wing celebrated its status as a fully operational C-5 facility Saturday. Members of the public braved the windy day to attend an open house featuring static displays of military air craft, a car and motorcycle show and various vendors and displays from military and local groups.
The highlight of the day came as a ceremony commemorating the ten year effort to make the 167th one of the nation’s premier C-5 facilities. Commander of the 167th, Colonel Roger Nye started off the ceremony by introducing Major General Allen E. Tackett, Governor Joe Manchin, and United States Senator Robert C. Byrd. The four sat at a table placed in the nose of the Spirit of Erma, a C-5 named in honor of Senator Byrd’s late wife. General Tackett spoke to the role Senator Byrd played in making the conversion possible, calling him one of the greatest Senators in the history of the nation.

The conversion created more than 200 full-time positions, offered new skill sets and has drawn nearly $280 million in federal dollars. Byrd feels this will ensure the long term stability of the Airlift Wing in the Eastern Panhandle.
