Senator Byrd Honors 167th

The 167th Airlift Wing celebrated its status as a fully operational C-5 facility Saturday.  Members of the public braved the windy day to attend an open house featuring static displays of military air craft, a car and motorcycle show and various vendors and displays from military and local groups.

The highlight of the day came as a ceremony commemorating the ten year effort to make the 167th one of the nation’s premier C-5 facilities.  Commander of the 167th, Colonel Roger Nye started off the ceremony by introducing Major General Allen E. Tackett, Governor Joe Manchin, and United States Senator Robert C. Byrd.  The four sat at a table placed in the nose of the Spirit of Erma, a C-5 named in honor of Senator Byrd’s late wife.  General Tackett spoke to the role Senator Byrd played in making the conversion possible, calling him one of the greatest Senators in the history of the nation.

Governor Manchin also credited Byrd with obtaining the funding necessary to transition, and also pointed to the work ethic of West Virginians and their willingness to serve.  Senator Byrd spoke about the more than 50 years of change the 167th has undergone with a brief history of the base.  In the 1960’s, Byrd recalls fending off efforts from the Pentagon to shut down the 167th entirely, but Byrd won approval to have it continue instead as an aerial medical unit.

Byrd commended General Tackett for serving tirelessly as West Virginia’s Adjunct General, and joked that Tackett is making it possible for Byrd to be the state’s $2 billion man.  Byrd also gave credit to the men and women serving in West Virginia’s Air National Guard and said without them the entire project would not have been possible.

The conversion created more than 200 full-time positions, offered new skill sets and has drawn nearly $280 million in federal dollars.  Byrd feels this will ensure the long term stability of the Airlift Wing in the Eastern Panhandle.
