Water Fair held at Library

The Martinsburg-Berkeley County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program “Why Water Works” made a splash this week with a Water Fair.  The two day event features representatives from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WV DEP) who are teaching participants about everything from the types of life that live in local water ways to how ground water works to water conservancy.  Youth Services Director at the Library Jane Levitan said this is the first time the WV DEP has ever done a water fair at a library.

Children got a chance to read a story about rain sticks then create on of their own using craft items.  They also were able to observe and interact with models that showed them what a water shed is and how ground water works. (VIDEO) Ginny DiFrancesco with the state DEP said it is important for children to understand how these systems work.  Also at the Library is Rose Long with the DEP’s Project WET, a water education program for teachers.  She said they do training workshops for teachers as well as education and outreach.

The event started at 10:30am Wednesday and runs into the afternoon.  It will be back at the Library’s main branch on Thursday from 10:00am until 3:00pm.  The event is rain or shine thanks to the indoor facilities at the library.
