The United Way Day of Caring got off to its 15th start in the Eastern Panhandle Tuesday. More than 1,000 volunteers from across Berkeley, Morgan and Jefferson Counties worked on projects for various organizations including everything from window washing to carpentry work. The event began at Martinsburg’s War Memorial park with the traditional breakfast.
WEPM’s Lesley and Jamie Lopez broadcast live from the event. They caught up with Executive Director of the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle Jan Callen who said this year there were more than 30 projects slated for completion. Callen said the event offers a significant savings to the charities because it allows them to put money towards program services rather than capitol expenses.
The ceremony began with several patriotic songs sung again by members of Phi Mu Alpha at Shepherd University. (CLICK HERE FOR VIDEO) and a prayer before organizers rallied the more than 100 volunteers to their feet and on their way to various sites across the region.

Hans Fogle hosted Panhandle Live form Panhandle Home Health in Martinsburg, on of the United Way Partners receiving services. He spoke with Joanne Wadsworth, Chair for the Day of Caring, and General Manager at Charles Town Races and Slots and a board member of the United Way Al Britton. Charles Town Races and Slots is a big supporter of the United Way, and even sponsored the t-shirts for this year’s Day of Caring. Britton emphasized the importance of being a good neighbor and said it is important as a company to give back to the community. Wadsworth spoke about getting the Day of Caring put together and stressed the significance of the sacrifices made not only by the volunteers, but by their employers who lose a day of work once a year.
The event closes with a dinner at the Clarion Inn in Shepherdstown.
