Berkeley County Commissioner unanimously passed a resolution endorsing the Board of Education’s Bond Issue during their meeting Thursday. The $51.5 million Bond will be used in several projects including construction of a new Spring Mills High School, a new middle school located next to Mountain Ridge Intermediate, renovation and addition to Martinsburg North Middle School and additional classrooms at Musselman High School. Commission President Ron Collins said the bond is important for the education of children in the county, but is also one of the few times the state is giving money to the Eastern panhandle. Berkeley County Schools received a grant from the West Virginia School Building Authority for $25 million dollars with the understanding that Berkeley County Schools will successfully pass a bond call on or before November 1. With the successful passage of the bond call Berkeley County anticipates additional School Building Authority grants of $20 million towards the construction costs of the south and central regional projects on the bond call. Collins says he sympathizes with those on a fixed income that do not want to see the bond passed, but said the additional costs will be minimal, and that since the bond issues usually have to come entirely form the people of Berkeley County, the deal is too good to pass up.
