Berkeley County BMX/Skatepark Opened

Christmas came early for skate board enthusiasts as the Berkeley County BMX/Skate Park opened its doors for a dedication.  The park opens to the public Wednesday evening, December 2nd.  Executive Director of Berkeley County parks and Recreation Steve Catlett spoke to the crowd at the facility located behind ROC’s Convenience Store on Kelly Island Road.  He explained that it had been something the board wanted to do for years, but issues with insurance, space and funding had always gotten in the way.  A citizens’ group was formed by parents who attended meetings and offered to help however they could.  Mark Peacemaker told the crowd he thanked Catlett for all of his hard work in a letter top the editor.  He said the only response he got was from the Roach Family, who offered to help make the park a reality.  The facility now housing $50,000 of equipment was once an apple cold storage site owned by the Roach family.  Their efforts, combined with a contribution from the Beth Jacob Synagogue Members and the Jewish Community and a change in the state’s attitude towards such parks made the facility a reality.  Catlett said he hopes it is an exciting place enjoyed by the community for years to come.
