Additional National Guard Troops in West Virginia
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Gov. Joe Manchin has called up another 300 West Virginia National Guard troops to help clean up after the state’s latest winter storm.
The additional troops bring the total number of guardsmen on storm duty to 800. They are supporting emergency operations in 14 counties.
Manchin called up the additional troops after emergency officials said more help was needed in north-central West Virginia and the state’s eastern and northern panhandles.
As of Thursday morning there were signs that things were returning to normal.
The state’s two largest electric utilities reported progress in restoring power. Allegheny Energy says about 6,800 customers were still without service. Appalachian Power’s Web site did not list any outages in West Virginia.
