Winter Weather Will Delay The Release Of The Class AAA Seedings For Girls State Tournament

Once again, the ugly side of old man winter has forced a scheduling change in high school basketball games across the state.  This time it’s a direct effect on Class AAA Region 3 Girls Basketball as the teams are still not set for the regional finals.

In Class AAA Region 3, the games in Section 1 went off on schedule, however in Section 2 of that region the championship game was postponed from the original play date of Friday, February 26th because Fayette, Mercer and Raleigh Counties were once again hit with a heavy blast of snow, blowing winds and cold temperatures.  It was the opinion of the WVSSAC that trying to play the Regional Final on the scheduled date of Tuesday, March 2nd would be unfair to Beckley Woodrow Wilson and Princeton, the two teams still trying to decide that sectional championship. The two other teams in that Region, Parkersburg South and Ripley are set to play and they will match up against either Beckley or Princeton in that Regional title game which is now set for Thursday, March 4th.  Parkersburg South will get the loser of the game between Beckley and Princeton in a game to be played at Parkersburg South.  Ripley will travel to either Beckley or Princeton to play.

According to Butch Powell, Assistant Executive Director of the WVSSAC, all other Class AAA Regional Championship games will be played as scheduled on Tuesday, March 2nd.  However, because of the delay in the Region 3 title game, the pairings in the Class AAA bracket for next week’s Girl’s State HIgh School Basketball Tournament cannot be released until Friday morning, March 5th.
