DEP Fines City of Weirton
(AP) - The Department of Environmental Protection is planning to fine Weirton for letting 8 percent of the city’s raw sewage flow directly into the Ohio River.
The amount of the fines hasn’t been decided, but attorney Dan Guida said the DEP told Weirton last week to expect them in a consent order to address the problem.
City officials revealed in March that sewage has gushed from an outfall on the former Weirton Steel Corp. property for about 50 years.
Luxembourg-based ArcelorMittal now owns the property and says it will cooperate on a safe and timely solution.
Guida says DEP told the city the problem is high on its priority list.
The city could face additional fines if it fails to meet DEP benchmarks for progress laid out in the consent order.
