Backpack Program Assisting those dealing with Gov Shutdown

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The federal government shutdown is now heading into its fourth week but a local group is looking to assist families who are directly effected.

The Berkeley County Backpack Program recently posted on social media that they offering weekend bags of non-perishables for families who are impacted.

Executive Director Lisa Henry was on Panhandle Live Monday and said the post was meant to remind people that the program serves for long term and short term need regardless of income level.

“The Backpack program is here for any long term need or temporary need and it could because of the federal government shutdown or any job loss,” said Henry. “I want to reach out to other families that wouldn’t normally think of us as an option.”

She adds that parents can learn how to sign up by talking to their child’s guidance counselor.
