Martinsburg Police: 23 month-old injured in hit-and-run

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Police are investigating a hit and run that injured a 23 month-old boy.

Martinsburg Police responded to the intersection of South Kentucky Avenue and West King Street at 7:19 Monday evening.

A witness told police he was walking in the 200 block of South Kentucky when a black, full sized pick up truck passed him going north on the one way street.

The witness heard a bump followed by a child crying. When the witness turned around, there was no vehicle in sight.

“MPD acknowledges that with little visibility entering that intersection, the size of the child, and the possibility of the vehicle involved being a large truck, the driver may not be aware they struck a child. MPD is also asking anyone who was driving in or near that intersection to come to the police station to compare their tire treads with the ones found on scene.”

– Statement from Chief Maury Richards

Further investigation revealed the child sneaked out of a house. When the adult responsible for watching the child went outside to find him, he had already been struck.

The boy was hospitalized, but Chief Richards confirmed his injuries are non-life threatening.
